Day 6

Happy Anniversary to us! Today is our 3 year anniversary and it was filled with lots of fun, good food, and even rain.

We woke up bright and early again! Even though there was some rain and low clouds, we decided to brave the outside world and go on a hike. We are in the Tatras Mountains, so what better thing to do than hike?! After having some breakfast and getting bundled up, we drove down from our Airbnb and found some parking near the entrance of the Koscieliska Valley. The rain was very minimal at this point, so we decided to go for it. There were lots of tour groups heading the same way that we were, mostly consisting of school age children. Adam and I have a theory that they are all still in school, but maybe they go on field trips during the day to local hikes and cities. We had a good pace, so we were able to bypass them pretty quickly, which left just us and nature.

The rain started to pick up slightly, so it was time for umbrellas. We hiked for the better part of an hour an a half (3.5 miles) and made it to a clearing. This clearing had a little lodge for tired and hungry hikers, which we were both. We found a nice little spot inside and ordered lunch. Today's anniversary feast included Bigos (hunters stew consisting of sausage, beef, cabbage and mushrooms) potato pancakes, oscypek (smoked sheep's cheese dipped in cranberry sauce) and of course, szarlotka (apple cake, not to be confused with apple pie). All were excellent. We ate just about every bite.

After our much needed break, we started back down the trail. The rain had let up again, so we made our way down without the use of umbrellas (mostly). For a total of 7 miles, our bodies were pretty worn. It was still fairly early, so we decided to drive into the city and walk around for a bit. The main street in Zakopane is Krupowski Street. There are bunch of shops and stands lining it with little knick-knacks and food that you can purchase. We were still pretty full from lunch, so nothing interested us too much, but it was fun to see everything.

After another hour or so of walking, we decided to call it quits for the day and head back. We stopped at a grocery store to pick up dinner and breakfast for tomorrow. More pierogies and then a sausage, potato and egg hash. Yum! We made it back to the Airbnb, and settled in for the night. There may have been another 2 hour nap involved...who's to say! Overall, a wonderful anniversary in a beautiful mountain town. Tomorrow is another full day here, so hopefully the weather is in our favor!
