Day 11

Good morning from Poznan!

Yesterday was a very relaxing day! We woke up in our castle (I love saying that) and were greeted with a traditional European breakfast: meats and cheeses, breads and cakes, and of course, eggs and sausage. I even had a chance to try grapefruit juice! Not half bad. We said farewell to Czocha and hit the road. After an hour or so of driving, we arrived in the small town of Boleslawiec (don't ask me how to pronounce this one!) It was very charming, with a town hall and lots of colorful buildings surrounding its main square. It was the perfect place for us to stretch our legs before the 3 hour drive to Poznan.

We hopped back in the car and continued on our way. The drive was beautiful and the weather was perfect, again! Time ticked away and before we knew it, we were in Poznan. We found some parking on the outskirts of the city center. Walking in was very exciting. I always love seeing new places. The streets were cobbled, and the city was relatively quiet on this Monday afternoon. The main square was amazing, one of the best that we have seen this whole trip! The buildings are very colorful, there are several fountains, and in the center is the large, ornate town hall (closed unfortunately due to renovation). We made a few passes around, taking pictures and marveling at the town before deciding we were hungry.

Lunch today was at a restaurant on the main square, Bamberka. We decided to splurge and get a cheese platter as an appetizer. It was delicious. There were 4 different types of cheese, crackers, walnuts, cranberries, honey and even bread. We ate just about everything on it. Next came our main courses. Adam had the zurek soup and I had a yummy grilled chicken salad. We were very pleased with our food choices, and happily ate.

After lunch, we walked around the main square a little bit more, and then headed over to the Fara Church (Jesuit Church). The inside was magnificent, probably the nicest church of the trip. And the cool temperature inside was just what we needed on this 85 degree day. We left the church and went back to our car to grab our things so that we could check into our Airbnb. After entering our codes and getting our keys, we entered what quite possibly will be, the nicest apartment of the trip! It's too bad we're only staying here one night! We had a little rest before heading back into the city for our evening stroll and dinner.

The sun was finally setting, creating some shade as we walked around the main square. We stopped in a pub and grabbed some refreshing drinks while we read up on the city. Poznan was under German control during WWII. In January of 1945, with the Soviet Army approaching, they became a Festung (stronghold). The city was barricaded and the inhabitants were ready for battle. After nearly a month of fighting and lots of damage, the Red Army prevailed and Poznan was eventually returned to Polish control. They spent many years rebuilding the city, but it was just as glorious as before.

It was getting close to dinner time so we decided to switch it up and went to a Thai restaurant, called Why Thai. It was exactly what we needed, a break from the heavy meat and potatoes that is common in Polish cuisine. We ordered spring rolls, a veggie curry, and tom yum soup. Everything was great, and on par with Thai food back home. We left feeling happy and full. We made a few more trips around the town square before calling it a night and heading back to our apartment. Overall, a very relaxing day. Tomorrow we are off to more cities, but this time, spending 2 nights at each place!
