Day 16

Hello from Warsaw!

We left Gdansk fairly early this morning around 7am to begin our 3.5 hour drive to the country's capital. The roads were smooth sailing and we arrived in the city around 10:30am. We had intentions of visiting the Warsaw Rising Museum, but they quickly changed once we realized the parking situation. The situation was that there was none! We circled for a while and drove around, but finally decided to drive closer to the old town and our Airbnb.

Again, parking proved to be quite difficult, but after a while, we found the perfect lot that was relatively close to both the old town and our apartment. We left the car and our belongings, for the time being, and headed up to the city. We were fairly hungry by this point, so we stopped for lunch at a little pizzeria called Ciao Napoli! For lunch we had margarita pizza and pepperoni pizza, both were quite tasty and filling. After lunch, we spent some time walking through the main square and the old town.

We stopped in the main square and saw the famous mermaid fountain, they symbol of Warsaw, and then headed over to the new town. Warsaw was completely destroyed during WWII so everything that is there today was rebuilt using debris from the city as well as neighboring cities (including Wroclaw!). We walked by a few churches and even the royal castle (which we will be seeing tomorrow) and took a rest on some steps while we enjoyed the music and the views. There were a lot of people roaming about, but it is a weekend, and we are in a very popular city.

As the time approached 2pm, we realized we hadn't got any check in information for our Airbnb. Thankfully, we were able to reach our host via wifi calling and got situated. There may have been a short nap soon after. After resting up, it was time to gather our things from the car and return it to the airport. It was not an easy task. We brought all of our things up from the parking lot (up many, many stairs) and then left the city (during a very high traffic time), got some gas (also took a while) and then found the parking lot for the car return at the airport. We then went into the airport to return the key, had to find the train to take back into the city and then find the tram that would take us back to old town. All in all, about a 3 hour process.

Once we were back in the city, we were ready to eat again. We wandered for a while before settling on a Mexican restaurant, El Popo. We were hesitant at first, but also very hungry so we sat down and ordered. Adam got a SPICY beef burrito and I had chicken enchiladas with rice and beans. It definitely didn't compare to the Mexican food back home, but it also wasn't terrible. We spent some time walking to help our dinner digest and may have stopped for a nutella covered waffle before finally calling it a night. Last day tomorrow!!
